This kavacham is told in the Skanda Purana. The yogi Rishabha gives it to the young prince Bhadrayu, who has lost his kingdom, along with a conch, a sword and a blessing of sacred ash — and with it the prince wins back his father’s throne.
It begins with meditation: Shiva seated in the lotus of the heart, filling all space with his light, beyond the senses, subtle and infinite. Then the armour is placed. Shiva as the earth protects from the earth, as water from water, as Kalarudra from forest fire and storm. His five faces — Tatpurusha, Aghora, Sadyojata, Vamadeva and Ishana — guard east, south, west, north and above.
Then each part of the body is given to one of his names; each watch of the day and night to another; and Virabhadra, Mrida and Pinaka are called upon against enemies, robbers and wild beasts. A long prose invocation follows in the full text (not included here); the verses end with the fruits of wearing the armour.
