                                      About Pashupati Ashtakam

Paśupati means “Lord of all creatures” — paśu, every bound soul, and pati, its master and protector. Shiva is worshipped in this form at the great Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu.

Unlike hymns that speak to Shiva, this one speaks to us. Each verse ends bhajata re manujā girijāpatim — “O people, worship the husband of Girija!” — and gives a reason: no father, mother, brother, child or family can protect us once time has claimed us; Shiva alone is the giver of refuge, of happiness and of fearlessness.

The rhythm is lively, almost like a folk song, which makes it easy to learn and joyful to sing.

                                      The Stories Inside the Hymn

                                      Pashu and Pati

In the Shaiva tradition, every soul is a paśu — a creature tied by the pāśa, the rope of ignorance, desire and karma. Shiva is the Pati, the Lord who can untie it.

So Pashupati is not only the protector of animals, but the one who sets every bound soul free.
