surely reach the presence of Kala Bhairava’s feet.

                                                                          About Kalabhairava Ashtakam

Kala Bhairava is Shiva’s fierce, protective form — the lord of time (kāla) who is feared even by death. He is the guardian deity (kṣetrapāla) of Kashi, the holy city of Varanasi, and tradition says no one may live in or leave Kashi without his permission.

This ashtakam, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, balances the frightening and the loving. Bhairava has fangs, carries a skull and a noose, and laughs a laugh that shatters the cosmic egg. Yet he is also kṛpākara, the source of compassion, the giver of both worldly joy and liberation, the protector of dharma and the one who cuts the noose of karma.

Every verse ends with the refrain kāśikāpurādhinātha-kālabhairavaṃ bhaje — “I worship Kala Bhairava, lord of the city of Kashi.” It is especially chanted on Kalashtami, the eighth day of the waning moon, and on Bhairava Jayanti.

                                                                          The Stories Inside the Hymn

                                                                          How Kala Bhairava was born

Once Brahma, proud of being the creator, claimed to be greater than Shiva and spoke to him with arrogance from his fifth head. From Shiva’s anger a blazing, terrifying form appeared — Kala Bhairava — who plucked off Brahma’s fifth head with his fingernail.

The skull stuck to Bhairava’s hand, and he had to wander the world as a beggar to atone. Only when he reached Kashi did the skull fall away. Shiva then made him the eternal guardian of that sacred city.

                                                                          The dog of Bhairava

Kala Bhairava’s vahana (companion animal) is a black dog. In many Bhairava temples, devotees feed dogs as part of their worship.

The dog is loyal, watchful and fearless in the night — the qualities of a guardian. It is also a reminder that the divine can be found in the humblest of beings.

Once through daily, or 8 or 11 times on Kalashtami.

                                                                          1. 1

                                                                          2. 2

                                                                          4. 4

                                                                          5. 5
