                                          About Vaidyanatha Ashtakam

Vaidyanātha means “Lord of physicians.” Shiva is worshipped in this form at the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga and, especially in Tamil Nadu, at Vaitheeswaran Koil, where pilgrims come to pray for healing.

The hymn praises Shiva as the healer of every illness — wind-born diseases, skin disease, the inability to speak, hear, see or walk — and as the one who frees us from fear and the suffering caused by spirits. Each verse ends śrī vaidyanāthāya namaḥ śivāya, and most singers add a ringing refrain between verses: śambho mahādeva.

The first verse names those who worshipped him: Rama and Lakshmana, the eagle Jatayu, the Vedas, six-faced Kartikeya, the Sun and Mars. The closing verse gives three names — Bālāmbikeśa, Vaidyeśa, Bhavarogahara — and says repeating them daily cures great illness.

                                          The Stories Inside the Hymn

                                          The temple of healing

At Vaitheeswaran Koil, Shiva is said to have come as a physician carrying a pot of healing oil, with Parvati as Thaiyal Nayaki beside him holding the medicine.

Jatayu, the brave eagle of the Ramayana, is also said to have been cremated there by Rama — which is why he is named in the hymn’s first verse.
