        About Dhanvantari Mantra

Dhanvantari is the physician of the gods and the patron of Ayurveda, India’s traditional medicine. He is a form of Vishnu (Vasudeva), which is why the mantra begins “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.”

The mantra praises him as the one who holds the pot of amṛta, the nectar of immortality, who destroys all disease, and who is lord of the three worlds. It is recited by Ayurvedic doctors before treating patients, and by families praying for someone’s recovery.

His festival is Dhanteras (Dhanvantari Trayodashi), two days before Diwali, which is also observed in India as National Ayurveda Day.

        The Stories Inside the Hymn

Rising from the ocean of milk

When the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, many wonders emerged — the wish-granting cow, the goddess Lakshmi, the moon. Last of all rose Dhanvantari, radiant and dark-skinned, carrying the golden pot of amrita in his hands.

He gave humanity the science of healing, and is still invoked wherever medicine meets prayer.
