                        When the demon Taraka caused great havoc, the gods together appealed to you;

āpa jalaṃdhara asura saṃhārā suyaśa tumhāra vidita saṃsārā

You yourself destroyed the demon Jalandhar; your fame is known throughout the world.

When Bhagiratha performed great penance, you, O destroyer of Tripura, fulfilled his vow.

Danin Mahan Tum Sam Kou Nahin, Sevak Stuti Karat Sadahin

dānina mahã tuma sama kou nāhīṃ sevaka stuti karata sadāhīṃ

Among givers there is none like you; your servants praise you always.

veda nāma mahimā tava gāī akatha anādi bheda nahiṃ pāī

The Vedas sing the glory of your name, yet cannot find your secret — beyond words, without beginning.

                                      Verses 17–20

                                      प्रकटी उदधि मंथन में ज्वाला । जरत सुरासुर भए विहाला ॥ १७ ॥

                                      When the poison’s fire appeared at the churning of the ocean, gods and demons burned in distress;

kīnhī dayā tahaṃ karī sahāī nīlakaṇṭha taba nāma kahāī

you took pity and helped them, and from then on were called Neelakantha, the blue-throated.

pūjana rāmacandra jaba kīnhā jīta ke laṃka vibhīṣaṇa dīnhā

When Ramachandra worshipped you, he conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishana.

Sahas Kamal Mein Ho Rahe Dhari, Keenh Pariksha Tabahin Purari

sahasa kamala meṃ ho rahe dhārī kīnha parīkṣā tabahiṃ purārī

As he offered a thousand lotuses, you, O Purari, put him to the test:

                                              एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई । कमल नयन पूजन चहं सोई ॥ २१ ॥

Ek Kamal Prabhu Rakheu Joi, Kamal Nayan Pujan Chahan Soi

eka kamala prabhu rākheu joī kamala nayana pūjana cahaṃ soī

you hid one lotus, and the lotus-eyed Rama wished to offer his own eye in its place.

Seeing such firm devotion, Lord Shankara was pleased and granted the boon he wished.

Victory, victory, victory to the endless, imperishable one, who dwells in every heart and blesses all.

All kinds of wickedness torment me daily; I wander confused and find no peace.

                                                      Verses 25–28

“Save me, save me,” I cry out, Lord — come now and rescue me.

Lai Trishul Shatrun Ko Maro, Sankat Se Mohi Aan Ubaro

lai triśūla śatruna ko māro saṃkaṭa se mohi āna ubāro

Take up your trident and strike down my enemies; come and lift me out of danger.

Maat Pita Bhrata Sab Hoi, Sankat Mein Poochhat Nahin Koi

māta-pitā bhrātā saba hoī saṃkaṭa meṃ pūchata nahiṃ koī

Mother, father, brothers — all are there, yet in a crisis no one asks after me.

svāmī eka hai āsa tumhārī āya harahu mama saṃkaṭa bhārī

Lord, you are my only hope; come and take away my heavy trouble.

                                                              Verses 29–32

Astuti Kehi Vidhi Karain Tumhari, Kshamahu Naath Ab Chook Hamari

astuti kehi vidhi karaiṃ tumhārī kṣamahu nātha aba cūka hamārī

How can we praise you properly? Lord, forgive our mistakes.

The Shiva Chalisa is the most widely recited Hindi hymn to Shiva, sung in homes and temples especially on Mondays, Pradosha and Shivaratri. The poet names himself in the first and last verses: Ayodhyadas.

It begins with a prayer to Ganesha, then describes Shiva — the moon on his brow, Ganga in his hair, the snake earrings, the tiger skin, Parvati at his left side — and the family on Kailash: Ganesha, Kartikeya and Nandi.

The middle verses recount his deeds: sending Kartikeya to slay Taraka, destroying Jalandhar and Tripura, granting Bhagiratha the Ganga, drinking the poison of the cosmic ocean, and testing and blessing Rama. The final section is a personal cry for help and a practical guide: recite it on Trayodashi, with incense, lamp and offerings.

                                                                                                The Stories Inside the Hymn

                                                                                                The missing lotus

Verses 20 to 22 tell how Rama worshipped Shiva with a thousand lotuses. To test him, Shiva hid one. Discovering the count was short, Rama — who is called “lotus-eyed” — prepared to offer one of his own eyes instead.

Moved by such devotion, Shiva appeared and granted him every wish.

                                                                                                Neelakantha

When gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean, a deadly poison rose first and began to burn all three worlds. Shiva drank it to save creation, and Parvati held it in his throat, which turned blue.

That is why he is called Neelakantha, “the blue-throated one” — the god who takes on poison so that others may live.

                                                                                                How to Chant Shiva Chalisa
