                                          About Kashi Vishwanathashtakam

Kashi — Varanasi — is the holiest city in Hindu tradition, and its presiding deity is Shiva as Viśvanātha, “Lord of the Universe,” one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is believed that anyone who dies in Kashi is granted liberation, because Shiva himself whispers the saving mantra into their ear.

This ashtakam, traditionally credited to Vyasa, praises Vishwanath verse by verse: the Ganga’s waves in his hair, Parvati at his left side, the tiger skin and serpent ornaments, the third eye that burned the god of desire. Every verse ends with the refrain vārāṇasīpurapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham.

The eighth verse is a short teaching on how to worship: give up craving, stop criticising others, turn the mind from wrongdoing and place the Lord in the lotus of the heart.

                                          The Stories Inside the Hymn

The city that never forgets Shiva

Kashi is said to rest on the tip of Shiva’s trident, outside ordinary time, so that it survives even the dissolution of the universe.

Pilgrims have come for thousands of years to bathe in the Ganga at its ghats, worship Vishwanath and, for many, to spend their final days there.

                                            End with Om Namah Shivaya.
