Skandamata — “mother of Skanda” — is the fifth form of Durga, worshipped on the fifth day of Navaratri. Skanda, also called Kartikeya or Murugan, is the warrior son of Shiva and Parvati.
She sits on a lotus upon a lion, holding the infant Skanda on her lap. She shows the Goddess as a mother: fierce in protection, endlessly tender in love.
Devotees say that worshipping her blesses you twice, because the child Skanda is worshipped along with her.
The demon Taraka could only be defeated by a son of Shiva. Skanda was born for that purpose and grew up to lead the army of the gods to victory.
Skandamata is the mother behind that victory — the love that raises courage in the next generation.
