Kushmanda is the fourth form of Durga, worshipped on the fourth day of Navaratri. Her name joins ku (“a little”), uṣmā (“warmth”) and aṇḍa (“the cosmic egg”): with a small warm smile she created the universe.
She is said to live in the very core of the sun, and her radiance lights every direction. Eight-armed, riding a lion, she holds weapons, a lotus, a rosary and pots of nectar.
She is worshipped for health, vitality and the energy to begin and create.
Before creation there was only darkness. The Goddess smiled, and from that faint, warm smile the cosmic egg appeared, and from it the whole universe unfolded.
So Kushmanda is the first light — the creative warmth that makes anything at all possible.
