Shailaputri — “daughter of the mountain” — is the first of the nine forms of Durga honoured during Navaratri. She is Parvati as the child of Himavan, king of the Himalayas, and the first step of the nine-night journey.
She rides Nandi the bull and holds a trident and a lotus, a crescent moon on her brow. Worshipping her first is like laying a foundation stone: steadiness, purity and rootedness, the qualities of the mountain itself.
This page gives the three verses usually chanted for her on the first day: the short name mantra, a prayer (prarthana) describing her form, and the “Ya Devi” praise.
In her previous life the Goddess was Sati, daughter of Daksha, who gave up her body when her father insulted Shiva. She was reborn as the daughter of the Himalaya, and so was called Shailaputri, Parvati and Haimavati.
As Shailaputri she again chose Shiva as her husband — the story of the nine forms begins here, with that unwavering choice.
