Brahmacharini is the second form of Durga, worshipped on the second day of Navaratri. Her name means “one who walks in Brahman” — the Goddess as a young ascetic devoted entirely to spiritual practice.
She walks barefoot in white, carrying a rosary for prayer and a water pot of the renunciate. She represents tapas: the inner fire created by discipline, patience and devotion.
Chant her mantra when you need steadiness in a long effort — study, healing, a vow or a spiritual practice.
To win Shiva as her husband, Parvati undertook years of fierce austerity, living on fruit, then on leaves, and finally on nothing at all — which is why she is also called Aparna, “without even a leaf.”
Her tapas shook the three worlds, and Shiva finally accepted her. Brahmacharini is that Parvati: love expressed as unbreakable commitment.
