Katyayani is the sixth form of Durga, worshipped on the sixth day of Navaratri. She was born in the hermitage of the sage Katyayana, who had prayed for the Goddess to come as his daughter.
This is the warrior Durga who defeated the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. She rides a lion and holds a sword and a lotus, her other hands granting fearlessness and blessings.
In the Bhagavata Purana, the young women of Vrindavan worshipped Katyayani for a month to win Krishna as their beloved, so she is also prayed to for a good marriage.
When Mahishasura could not be defeated by any god, their combined anger and power blazed into one great light. That light took form in Katyayana’s hermitage as a radiant goddess.
The gods gave her their weapons, and she rode out to end the demon’s tyranny.
