        About Mahalakshmi Beej Mantra

A bīja, or seed, mantra is a single sacred syllable that holds a deity’s power the way a seed holds a tree. Lakshmi’s own seed is Śrīṃ (Shreem) — the sound of abundance, beauty and auspiciousness.

The first mantra combines three seeds: Shreem for Lakshmi, Hreem for the Goddess’s power that pervades everything, and Kleem for attraction and fulfilment. Together they ask for prosperity that is also graceful and whole.

The second mantra is one of the most popular Lakshmi mantras of all: it calls her Kamalā, the lotus one, who dwells in the lotus, and asks again and again, prasīda — “be gracious to me.”

        The Stories Inside the Hymn

Shree — the word for everything good

Śrī, the root of Shreem, is one of the richest words in Sanskrit. It means wealth, but also beauty, light, glory, success and holiness. That is why it is placed before the names of gods, saints and sacred books: Shri Rama, Shri Guru, Shri Bhagavad Gita.

Chanting Shreem is not only asking for money — it is inviting every kind of goodness.
