            About Lakshmi Kubera Mantra

Kubera is the treasurer of the gods and guardian of the north. Where Lakshmi is the source of wealth, Kubera is its keeper — he looks after and distributes the riches of the universe. He is a yaksha, a nature spirit, and a devoted friend of Shiva.

The first mantra calls him by his names — Yaksha, Kubera, Vaiśravaṇa (son of the sage Vishrava) — and as dhana-dhānya-adhipati, “lord of wealth and grain,” then asks him to grant and bestow abundance.

The second, the Lakshmi Kubera mantra, combines the seed sounds of Lakshmi with Kubera’s name and asks that the eight forms of Lakshmi fill the home with wealth. It is especially chanted on Dhanteras and Diwali.

            The Stories Inside the Hymn

The treasurer who lent to Vishnu

A well-loved legend from Tirupati says that when Lord Venkateshwara (Vishnu) wished to marry Padmavati, he borrowed a huge sum from Kubera to pay for the wedding.

Devotees still say they are helping the Lord repay that loan when they make offerings at Tirupati — and Kubera, the patient lender, is honoured for it.
