Verse 1

Angam Hareh Pulaka Bhushanam Ashrayanti

aṅgaṃ hareḥ pulakabhūṣaṇamāśrayantī

Her glance rests on the body of Hari, adorned with thrills of joy,

    भृङ्गाङ्गनेव मुकुलाभरणं तमालम् ।

    Bhringanganeva Mukulabharanam Tamalam

    bhṛṅgāṅganeva mukulābharaṇaṃ tamālam

    like a female bee on a tamala tree adorned with buds;

      अङ्गीकृताखिलविभूतिरपाङ्गलीला

      Angikritakhila Vibhutir Apanga Lila

      aṅgīkṛtākhilavibhūtirapāṅgalīlā

that playful sideways glance which holds all the riches of the world —

        Mangalyadastu Mama Mangala Devatayah

        māṅgalyadā'stu mama maṅgaladevatāyāḥ

may the glance of the goddess of auspiciousness bring me good fortune.

          Verse 2

          Mugdha Muhur Vidadhati Vadane Murareh

          mugdhā muhurvidadhatī vadane murāreḥ

Again and again, enchanted, she turns her eyes to Murari’s face,

            Prema Trapa Pranihitani Gatagatani

            prematrapāpraṇihitāni gatāgatāni

glances that come and go, full of love and shyness,

              Mala Drishor Madhukariva Mahotpale Ya

              mālā dṛśormadhukarīva mahotpale yā

that garland of glances, like a bee hovering at a great blue lotus —

Sa Me Shriyam Dishatu Sagara Sambhavayah

                sā me śriyaṃ diśatu sāgarasambhavāyāḥ

may that glance of the ocean-born goddess grant me prosperity.

                  Verse 3

                  Amilitaksham Adhigamya Muda Mukundam

                  āmīlitākṣamadhigamya mudā mukunda-

Gazing with joy on Mukunda, his eyes half-closed in bliss,

                    Ananda Kandam Animesham Ananga Tantram

                    mānandakandamanimeṣamanaṅgatantram

the root of all bliss, her eyes unblinking, held in love’s spell,

                      Akekara Sthita Kaninika Pakshma Netram

                      ākekarasthitakanīnikapakṣmanetraṃ

her pupils resting at the corners of her eyes beneath her lashes —

                        Bhutyai Bhaven Mama Bhujangashayanganayah

                        bhūtyai bhavenmama bhujaṅgaśayāṅganāyāḥ

may that glance of the beloved of the serpent-reclining Lord bring me abundance.

                          Verse 4

                          Bahvantare Madhujitah Shrita Kaustubhe Ya

                          bāhvantare madhujitaḥ śritakaustubhe yā

On the chest of Madhu’s conqueror, where the Kaustubha jewel rests,

                            हारावलीव हरिनीलमयी विभाति ।

                            Haravaliva Harinilamayi Vibhati

                            hārāvalīva harinīlamayī vibhāti

                            her glances shine like a necklace of sapphires;

                              कामप्रदा भगवतोऽपि कटाक्षमाला

                              Kamaprada Bhagavatopi Katakshamala

                              kāmapradā bhagavato'pi kaṭākṣamālā

that garland of glances, which fulfils even the Lord’s own desires —

                                Kalyanam Avahatu Me Kamalalayayah

                                kalyāṇamāvahatu me kamalālayāyāḥ

may it bring me blessings, the goddess who dwells in the lotus.

                                  Verse 5

                                  kālāmbudālilalitorasi kaiṭabhāre-

On the chest of Kaitabha’s slayer, lovely as a mass of dark rain clouds,

                                    र्धाराधरे स्फुरति या तडिदङ्गनेव ।

                                    rdhārādhare sphurati yā taḍidaṅganeva

                                    she flashes like lightning across a storm cloud;

                                      मातुः समस्तजगतां महनीयमूर्ति-

                                      Matuh Samasta Jagatam Mahaniya Murtir

                                      mātuḥ samastajagatāṃ mahanīyamūrti-

the adorable form of the mother of all the worlds —

                                        Bhadrani Me Dishatu Bhargava Nandanayah

                                        rbhadrāṇi me diśatu bhārgavanandanāyāḥ

may she, the daughter of Bhrigu, grant me good fortune.

                                          Verse 6

                                          prāptaṃ padaṃ prathamataḥ khalu yatprabhāvā-

By whose power the god of love first found his place

in the auspicious heart of the slayer of Madhu —

may that slow, gentle half-glance fall upon me here,

                                                mandālasaṃ ca makarālayakanyakāyāḥ

the soft, languid glance of the daughter of the ocean.

It is chanted to invite prosperity, but above all to ask for her compassion towards those in need.

Most of the hymn is about Lakshmi’s glance — the gentle, shy, loving look she gives Vishnu. Shankara compares it to a bee drawn to a flower, to lightning flashing across a dark rain cloud, to a necklace of sapphires on Vishnu’s chest. Then he prays that just half of that glance might fall on a poor, helpless devotee, like rain on a thirsty bird.

The later verses are pure salutation (namo’stu…), naming her as Veda, delight, power, nourishment, born of the ocean of milk, sister of the moon, beloved of Vishnu and Krishna. The hymn ends with a promise that those who praise her daily become rich in virtue and good fortune and are honoured by the wise.

                                                                                                                                                                                  The stream of gold

As a young brahmachari, Shankara went from house to house asking for food, as was the custom. At one poor home the woman had nothing to give except a single dried amla (gooseberry) fruit. Ashamed but generous, she gave it to him.

Moved by her kindness, Shankara sang this hymn to Lakshmi on the spot. The goddess appeared and showered the house with golden amla fruits — a kanakadhārā, a stream of gold. The story is told to show that Lakshmi responds to generosity of heart, not wealth.

                                                                                                                                                                                  The power of a glance

Throughout the hymn, everything good flows from Lakshmi’s glance (kaṭākṣa). Even half a glance, says verse 7, could grant the throne of Indra.

It is a lovely way of saying that grace does not need effort or merit — just being seen with compassion can change a life.
