                      About Saraswati Suktam

Long before Saraswati was pictured with a veena and a swan, she was a river — the great Sarasvatī of the Rigveda, on whose banks the Vedic hymns were composed. Gradually the river of water became the river of speech and knowledge, and the Goddess of learning was born.

There is no single fixed “Saraswati Suktam”; different traditions gather Rigvedic verses to her into a sequence. This page gives some of the best known: Pāvakā naḥ sarasvatī (Rigveda 1.3.10–12), Ambitame nadītame devitame (2.41.16) and Pra ṇo devī sarasvatī (6.61.4).

In them Saraswati purifies, inspires true speech, awakens good thoughts, and is called “best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses.”

                      The Stories Inside the Hymn

                      The lost river

The Vedic river Saraswati later dried up and vanished. Tradition says it still flows underground and joins the Ganga and Yamuna at Prayagraj — the Triveni Sangam, the meeting of three rivers.

The invisible river is a beautiful image of knowledge itself: unseen, but flowing beneath everything.
