                      About Saraswati Vandana

Saraswati Vandana means “salutation to Saraswati.” Its first verse, Ya Kundendu, is sung every morning in schools across India, at the start of exams, concerts and classical dance recitals, and above all on Vasant Panchami, Saraswati’s festival in early spring.

The verses paint her in white: white as jasmine, as the moon, as snow and as a string of pearls, dressed in white, seated on a white lotus. White is the colour of clarity and purity of mind. In her hands she holds the veena (music and the arts), a book (knowledge), a crystal rosary (meditation) and a gesture of blessing.

The heart of the prayer is its last request: niḥśeṣa-jāḍyāpahā — “she who removes every trace of dullness.” Saraswati is asked not simply for information, but for a bright, awake, understanding mind.

                      The Stories Inside the Hymn

                      Vasant Panchami

On the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Magha, at the first stirrings of spring, Saraswati is worshipped across India. Students place their books and pens at her feet, musicians their instruments, and young children often write their very first letters on this day.

People wear yellow, the colour of the mustard flowers blooming in the fields — the colour of new knowledge ripening.

                      The river of wisdom

In the Rig Veda, Saraswati is first a great river, praised as the best of mothers and best of rivers. Over time the flowing river became a symbol of flowing speech, music and thought.

That is why she is the goddess of vāk — speech — and why her blessing is sought by anyone who learns, teaches, writes or sings.
