Mahagauri — “the radiantly white” — is the eighth form of Durga, worshipped on Ashtami, the eighth day of Navaratri. She is dazzling white like the moon, jasmine and conch-shell, dressed in white and riding a white bull.
She is peace after the storm: four-armed, holding a trident and a small drum, granting fearlessness and blessings. She represents purification and the washing away of all that is past.
Ashtami is one of the most important days of Navaratri, when young girls are often honoured as living forms of the Goddess (kanya puja).
After her long, harsh penance, Parvati’s body had darkened with dust and sun. When Shiva finally accepted her, he bathed her with the waters of the Ganga, and her body shone brilliant white.
So Mahagauri is the reward of sincere effort: everything that was hard becomes radiant.
