Ājñā means 'command' — in tradition, the place where the inner teacher's guidance is received. It sits between the eyebrows. Beyond the five physical elements, its element is mind itself.
What The Third Eye Governs
Insight, intuition, imagination, memory and the ability to see patterns — in your life and in yourself. It's not about visions so much as clarity: seeing a situation as it is, not as you fear or wish it to be.
It's traditionally shown as a two-petalled lotus, the two petals often read as the meeting of the left and right channels (ida and pingala) from alternate nostril breathing.
Signs Of Imbalance
Look for long-running patterns.
- ✦Under-active: confusion, can't see the bigger picture, distrust of intuition, poor memory, rigid thinking
- ✦Overactive: overthinking, getting lost in fantasy or signs, difficulty staying grounded in facts
- ✦Balanced: clear sight, trusted intuition, imagination that serves real life
Working With The Third Eye
The third eye responds to focused attention and quiet. Candle gazing (trataka), alternate nostril breathing, journalling your dreams and drawing a daily oracle card with an evening check-in all train clear seeing. Too much screen time and constant input dull it.
Its bija is OM (AUM). Chant it slowly in three parts — 'ahh', 'ooo', 'mmm' — and feel the 'mmm' resonate in the head.
The practice · 10 minutes
Candle Gazing And OM
- 1Place a candle at eye level about an arm's length away in a dim, draught-free room.
- 2Do one minute of alternate nostril breathing (Breathwork Lesson 6) to settle.
- 3Gaze softly at the flame, blinking as needed, for one to two minutes.
- 4Close your eyes and watch the after-image between the eyebrows until it fades.
- 5Chant OM slowly nine times, letting the 'mmm' resonate in the head.
- 6Today's action: before one decision today, pause and ask 'what do I already know about this?'
Coming back to it: On repeat cycles, keep a dream journal for the week or join the Oracle Card Reading course's daily draw with evening check-ins.
Journal prompts
- “What do I already know, deep down, that I'm pretending not to?”
- “Where am I overthinking instead of seeing?”
- “What pattern in my life is becoming visible lately?”
