Lesson 8 of 8 · 12 min

Crown Chakra

Sahasrāra — meaning, spirit and wholeness

Crown Chakra

Sahasrāra, the 'thousand-petalled', sits at the crown of the head — or just above it. In tradition it's less a chakra than the place where the journey through the others completes: the meeting of individual awareness with the whole.

What The Crown Governs

Meaning, purpose, spiritual connection, wonder and a sense of being part of something larger — whatever name you give it. It's also about openness: holding your beliefs lightly enough to keep learning.

It's shown as a lotus of a thousand petals, sometimes pointing downwards like an open umbrella of light. It has no element and, in most systems, no bija: it's approached through silence.

Signs Of Imbalance

Look for long-running patterns.

  • ✦Under-active: cynicism, meaninglessness, feeling cut off, closed-mindedness, 'is this all there is?'
  • ✦Overactive: spiritual bypassing — using spirituality to avoid feelings or practical life, feeling superior, ungrounded
  • ✦Balanced: a quiet sense of meaning that doesn't need to escape ordinary life

Completing The Cycle

Crown work is the most likely to drift into abstraction, so anchor it. Silent meditation, time in nature under a big sky, gratitude and service to others all open the crown while keeping you grounded. Notice that the antidote to an overactive crown is the root: the two ends of the spine need each other.

When you finish this lesson, retake the Chakra Check-In and compare it with your first one. Then start the cycle again whenever you're ready — the map stays the same, but you won't.

The practice · 10 minutes

Silent Sitting

  1. 1Sit comfortably with your spine upright, as if a thread lifts you gently from the crown of the head.
  2. 2Chant OM three times, then let the sound fade into silence.
  3. 3Rest your attention at the top of your head. Don't do anything. Simply be aware.
  4. 4When thoughts come, let them pass like clouds and return to the quiet at the crown.
  5. 5After about eight minutes, bring attention down to your feet on the floor for three breaths — crown to root.
  6. 6Retake the Chakra Check-In on the course page and compare with your first.

Coming back to it: On repeat cycles, spend crown day outdoors: twenty minutes under an open sky with no phone, then write one line on what feels meaningful in your life right now.

Journal prompts

  • “What gives my life meaning — honestly, not ideally?”
  • “Where do I use spirituality to avoid something practical?”
  • “How did my second Check-In compare with my first?”

Check Your Understanding

3 quick questions. Retake it any time.

1. What does 'Sahasrāra' mean?

2. How is the crown usually approached in this course?

3. What is 'spiritual bypassing'?
