Throat Chakra

Viśuddha — truth, voice and expression

Throat Chakra

Viśuddha, 'especially pure', sits at the throat. Its element is space — the openness sound travels through. This is where what's inside becomes words.

What The Throat Governs

Speaking, listening, honesty, expression and creative communication. It's the bridge between the heart and the head: saying what you feel, and hearing what others are actually saying rather than what you expect them to say.

It's traditionally shown as a sixteen-petalled lotus containing a circle, the symbol of space.

Signs Of Imbalance

Look for long-running patterns.

  • ✦Under-active: swallowing words, fear of speaking up, a quiet or tight voice, saying yes when you mean no
  • ✦Overactive: talking over others, gossip, oversharing, not listening, harshness
  • ✦Balanced: clear, honest and kind speech — and real listening

Working With The Throat

The throat responds to sound. Humming, chanting and singing all use it directly, and long humming exhales are also deeply calming. The other half is honesty in small things: saying 'actually, I'd prefer…' instead of going along.

Its bija is HAM — 'hum'. Chant it clearly and feel the vibration in your throat. Mantra chanting of any kind is throat practice; the Mantra Library is full of it.

The practice · 8 minutes

Humming Breath And HAM

  1. 1Sit tall with your chin slightly tucked. Roll your shoulders down.
  2. 2Breathe in through the nose. On the exhale, hum with lips closed for as long as is comfortable. Repeat ten times and feel the buzz in your throat and face.
  3. 3Gently turn your head side to side three times, then tilt ear to shoulder on each side.
  4. 4Chant HAM nine times, clearly.
  5. 5Say one true sentence out loud that you've been holding back — even if no one hears it.
  6. 6Today's action: one small honest 'I'd prefer…' in a real conversation.

Coming back to it: On repeat cycles, chant one short mantra from the Mantra Library daily for the week, or sing along to a song for its full length.

Journal prompts

  • “What have I not been saying?”
  • “When do I talk to avoid listening?”
  • “What would I say if I knew it would be received kindly?”
