Verse 1

Bala Samaya Rabi Bhakshi Liyo Taba Tinahun Loka Bhayo Andhiyaro

As a child you swallowed the sun, and all three worlds fell into darkness.

Tahi Son Trasa Bhayo Jaga Ko Yaha Sankata Kahu Son Jata Na Taro

The whole world was terrified, and no one could end this disaster.

Devana Ani Kari Binati Taba Chhandi Diyo Rabi Kashta Nivaro

devana āni karī binatī taba chāṃṛi diyo rabi kaṣṭa nivāro

When the gods came and pleaded, you released the sun and ended their suffering.

bāli kī trāsa kapīsa basai giri jāta mahāprabhu paṃtha nihāro

Afraid of Bali, Sugriva hid on the mountain, watching the road as Rama passed.

cauṃki mahā muni sāpa diyo taba cāhiya kauna bicāra bicāro

Startled, and bound by a great sage’s curse, he did not know what to do —

Jivata Na Bachihau Hama So Ju Bina Sudhi Laye Ihan Pagu Dharo

jīvata nā bacihau hama so ju binā sudhi lāe ihāṃ pagu dhāro

heri thake taṭa siṃdhu sabai taba lāya siyā-sudhi prāna ubāro

When all of them sat exhausted on the seashore, you brought back news of Sita and saved their lives.

At that very moment, great Hanuman, you arrived and struck down the mighty demons.

When the weapon of Ravana’s son struck Lakshmana’s chest and his life was slipping away,

Ko Nahin Janata Hai Jaga Men Kapi Sankata Mochana Nama Tiharo

Ravana Juddha Ajana Kiyo Taba Naga Ki Phansa Sabai Sira Daro

When Ravana fought by trickery and cast the noose of serpents over everyone,

Then, Hanuman, you brought Garuda, king of birds, who cut the bonds and ended the terror.

When Ahiravana carried Rama and his brother away to the underworld,

and his people plotted to worship their goddess and offer the brothers as a sacrifice,

                                                          Verse 8

body strong as a thunderbolt, crusher of demons — victory, victory, victory to the heroic monkey-lord!

                                                                      About Hanuman Ashtak

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak is one of the most beloved prayers to Hanuman in North India, usually recited straight after the Hanuman Chalisa. Like the Chalisa it is in Awadhi, the old Hindi of the Ayodhya region, and it is traditionally attributed to Tulsidas.

Its structure tells a story. Each verse retells one crisis from the Ramayana — the sun swallowed and the world plunged into darkness, Sita lost, Lakshmana struck down, Rama bound by serpent-arrows, Rama and Lakshmana carried off to the underworld — and how Hanuman came to the rescue every time. Then comes the refrain: ko nahiṃ jānata hai jaga meṃ kapi saṃkaṭamocana nāma tihāro — “who in the world does not know your name, O monkey-lord, remover of troubles?”

The last verse turns personal: “You have done such great deeds for the gods — what trouble of mine, a poor soul, could you not remove? Take away quickly whatever trouble is mine.” It is chanted when people feel overwhelmed and need help.

                                                                      The Stories Inside the Hymn

                                                                      Ahiravana and the underworld

Verse 7 tells of Ahiravana, a sorcerer-king of the underworld and ally of Ravana. During the war he cast a spell of sleep, kidnapped Rama and Lakshmana and carried them down to Patala to sacrifice them to his goddess.

Hanuman followed them into the underworld, fought his way past every guardian and slew Ahiravana with his whole army, bringing the brothers safely home. It is one of the most dramatic rescues in Hanuman’s story.

Sankat Mochan, the temple of Varanasi

In Varanasi stands the famous Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple, said to have been founded by Tulsidas himself at the spot where he had a vision of Hanuman.

Devotees crowd there especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays to recite the Chalisa and this Ashtak, asking Hanuman to free them from their troubles.

                                                                      How to Chant Hanuman Ashtak

                                                                      3. 3
