          About Anjani Garbha Sambhuta

This is one of the most popular short prayers to Hanuman, recited every morning by countless families. In one verse it names his birth (from the womb of Anjana), his role (minister and counsellor to the monkey king Sugriva) and his heart (beloved of Rama), and asks for his protection always.

It is very often chanted together with a second verse, “Buddhir balam yasho dhairyam,” which lists eight gifts that come from remembering Hanuman: intelligence, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, good health, alertness and skill in speech. Both are on this page.

Together they make an ideal morning practice for students, workers and anyone who needs a clear mind and a strong heart for the day.

          The Stories Inside the Hymn

The baby who leapt for the sun

Soon after he was born, baby Hanuman saw the rising sun and thought it was a ripe red fruit. He leapt into the sky to grab it. Indra struck him with his thunderbolt, and the infant fell, his jaw (hanu) injured — which is how he got his name.

His father, the Wind, withdrew in grief and all life began to suffocate. The gods hurried to bless the child with every gift, and that is why Hanuman holds the strengths this prayer asks for.
