Sacral Chakra

Svādhiṣṭhāna — feeling, pleasure and creativity

Sacral Chakra

Svādhiṣṭhāna, 'one's own place', sits in the lower belly. Its element is water. Where the root is about staying solid, the sacral centre is about flow: feelings moving, pleasure, play and the urge to create.

What The Sacral Governs

This centre gathers emotion, sensuality, pleasure, desire and creativity. It's about being able to feel what you feel and enjoy what's enjoyable — food, music, movement, touch, making things — without guilt or excess.

It's traditionally shown as a six-petalled lotus with a crescent moon, the symbol of water.

Signs Of Imbalance

Look for long-running patterns.

  • ✦Under-active: numbness, flatness, rigidity about pleasure, creative block, feeling disconnected from desire
  • ✦Overactive: emotional flooding, drama, compulsive pleasure-seeking, difficulty with boundaries
  • ✦Balanced: emotions move and pass, healthy enjoyment, playful creativity

Working With The Sacral

Water responds to movement. Slow hip circles, dancing alone to music you love, swimming or a warm bath all help. So does making something with no goal — doodling, cooking without a recipe, humming a tune you're making up.

Its bija is VAM — 'vum'. Chant it in a middle-low voice and feel it in the lower belly.

The practice · 8 minutes

Hip Circles And VAM

  1. 1Stand with feet wider than hips, hands on hips, knees soft.
  2. 2Make slow circles with your hips, ten in one direction and ten in the other. Let the breath be easy.
  3. 3Put on one song you love and move however your body wants for its full length. No one is watching.
  4. 4Sit and place both hands on your lower belly. Chant VAM nine times.
  5. 5Notice: is there any feeling under your hands? Name it without judging it.
  6. 6Today's action: do one thing purely for pleasure, with full attention.

Coming back to it: On repeat cycles, spend 15 minutes making something with no purpose: drawing, clay, cooking, writing a silly poem.

Journal prompts

  • “What emotion have I been avoiding feeling lately?”
  • “When did I last enjoy something without guilt?”
  • “What would I create if no one would ever see it?”
