                                              About Kalika Ashtakam

The Kalika Ashtakam opens with a dhyāna, a meditation picture of Kali in three verses: dark and fierce, roaring, with a garland of heads, her hair loose, dwelling in the cremation ground, holding a sword and a severed head in her left hands while her right hands grant fearlessness and blessing, smiling, surrounded by howling jackals. It is meant to be startling — Kali is the reality beyond our comfort.

Then the hymn turns. Each of the eight verses that follow ends svarūpaṃ tvadīyaṃ na vindanti devāḥ — “the gods do not know your true form.” Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva became great by worshipping her, yet even they cannot grasp her. She is the wish-fulfilling vine, the lady of consciousness and bliss, neither young nor old, sometimes dark as a storm cloud, sometimes red, sometimes white.

The fierce imagery is symbolic: the severed head is the ego, the garland of heads the letters of the alphabet, the cremation ground the place where everything false burns away.

                                              The Stories Inside the Hymn

The dark one who cannot be grasped

Kāla means both “time” and “black.” Kali is time itself, which swallows everything — and the darkness that remains when every form has dissolved.

That is why the gods, who are forms, cannot know her form: she is what all forms come from and return to.

                                              Frequently Asked Questions

What does Svarupam Tvadiyam Na Vindanti Devah mean?

“Even the gods do not know your true form.”

                                              Who wrote the Kalika Ashtakam?

It is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya.

Why is Kali described so fiercely?

Her imagery is symbolic: the severed head is the ego, the cremation ground is where all illusions burn away, and her fierceness protects her devotees from what harms them.
